02 Dec E911 Laws – Keeping Your Customers Safe
When it comes to servicing customers, and particularly customers who have remote workers to think about, it’s important to put their safety at the forefront. There are a lot of laws in place when it comes to keeping people safe, especially in communications, and we are beyond thankful for them. But it can also be difficult to know if you are following all of the guidelines required of a telecom service provider. E911 safety regulations, Kari’s Law, and the RAY BAUM’s Act were put in place to ensure the safety of phone service users. And we’re here to help you navigate each one.
E911 Safety Regulations
911 regulations require every placed call to automatically send in the telephone number and location of the caller. E911, or Enhanced 911, was put into place specifically to make it easier to find the caller. It automatically gives emergency services the telephone number and location when the caller is not using a traditional landline. This is more important than ever with VoIP solutions, as they are more mobile than landlines. E911 also ensures that all 911 calls are routed to the closest emergency facility. And not one in a completely wrong location.
The FCC requires that E911 capabilities are in place by all wireless carriers. This is all to protect the caller no matter what the situation is. If they cannot speak for any reason, it allows emergency services to locate and assist as needed.
Can 911 find your customers’ remote workers?
As the rise in remote work continues, it’s important to keep your workers’ safety in mind. The regulations behind E911 were designed to do just that. So, as your remote workers may be bringing their work numbers home with them, it’s important to keep their emergency settings up to date. This means updating their location information so that if an emergency arises, they can be located by emergency services. Their lives could depend on it.
Kari’s law, while recent, having just come into effect in February of 2020, is important to know about, especially in the telecom community. It applies to multi-line telephone systems (MLTS). There are two main points of said law. The first focuses on direct dialing to 911 services, and the second on sending notifications to support personnel.
As this applies to MLTS, the first portion of the law that’s focused on the direct connection to 911 is put into place to make sure that callers don’t need to dial out in order to call for help. In an emergency, this helps prevent confusion and streamlines the call straight to emergency services. Instead of having to dial out with a prefix digit like “9”.
Once an emergency dial has been made, Kari’s law requires that the proper channels within the business must be notified. This can be security, the front desk, or a manager. Whoever has knowledge of the building and quick access to locked rooms. This is to help the emergency services personnel get where they need to go quickly and easily.
RAY BAUM’S Act
The RAY BAUM’S Act stands for Repack Airwaves Yielding Better Access for Users of Modern Services. While it’s an extremely thorough Act, there is a section (506) that focuses on 911 calls to help improve location accuracy for emergency purposes.
The important portion of this Act is its requirement of a Dispatchable Location as opposed to just a civic address like a campus or building. Instead, it requires more information like building numbers, floor, and even office or cubicle numbers. This ensures faster response times in emergency situations where the caller may not be able to state this information themselves.
